Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is SportsYapper?
SportsYapper is a free app that connects you with friends and fans while you're watching a game on TV. With 86% of mobile Internet users on their mobile devices while watching TV, SportsYapper is the ultimate second screen app for sports fans. Even when you're watching alone on your couch, SportsYapper lets you share the excitement, frustration, anticipation and everything else that goes on just like when you're watching with friends.
2. Why use SportsYapper when I can talk about sports on Facebook or Twitter?
Sure, you can talk sports on Facebook or Twitter, but we wanted to provide a place that's just for sports fans. A place where you know you're talking with friends and fans who are watching the game and where sports doesn't get squeezed in with posts about family photos, who's at Starbucks and who should get voted off American Idol. There are already web sites and apps dedicated solely to people who want to talk about food, photos or music. But as sports fans, we don't want to talk sports with people who don't really care, we want to talk about the game with friends and fans who care as much as we do. That's what SportsYapper is all about.
3. Can I share my yapps on Twitter and Facebook?
Yes, you can easily share anything you post on SportsYapper to Facebook and Twitter.
4. Is SportsYapper only available for iPhone, iPad and Android?
For now, SportsYapper is available as an app for iPhone, iPad and Android. Soon, we'll be rolling out a web and mobile web version ofsportsyapper.com that offers the same real-time, social experience during the game as the mobile apps.
5. Why do I have to sign in to SportsYapper using Facebook?
SportsYapper is a place for authentic sports talk. And while there's always room for some smack talk when it comes to sports, we didn't create SportsYapper to give users with names like xyz123 yet another place to rip on everyone or spam people. To help ensure this, we require all users to sign in using their Facebook ID's (real name and real profile picture). This also makes it very simple for you to immediately find and follow your friends from Facebook here on SportsYapper (you'll also be able to find your Twitter friends).
6. What is Game On!?
Game On lets you easily tell your friends what game you're watching and invites them to join you on SportsYapper to Yapp it with you. Also, when you're in Game On mode, we'll send you a notification when your friends Yapp about the game (you can turn these notifications off if you like... more on that below), keeping you up to speed on your friends reactions as play unfolds.
7. Why are yapps limited to 300 characters?
We think a character limit helps maintain the flow and spontaneity of the conversation. However, we wanted to go beyond the 140 character limit on Twitter because that often seems to prevent us from saying what we need to say. So we tested a bunch of different limits and found that 300 characters was just right. Kind of like a football field being 100 yards, the base path at 90 feet and a basketball rim standing 10 feet tall, 300 characters feels like the perfect fit.
8. Can I follow people on SportsYapper without making them a friend on Facebook?
Absolutely. One of the key reasons we created SportsYapper was so people could have a place that's just for connecting with friends and fans who like talking sports. So feel free to follow people on SportsYapper without making them a friend on Facebook.
9. When does SportsYapper send push notifications?
You can turn off any of these notifications whenever you like, but by default, SportsYapper will send you the following notifications:
- Game On: when one of your friends calls "Game On" for a game they're watching on TV.
- Game On Yapps: when one of your friends Yapps about a game you're watching.
- New Follows: when someone new follows you on SportsYapper.
- Replies: when another user replies to one of your Yapps.
- Mentions: when someone @mentions you on SportsYapper.
10. How do I delete my account?
In the iPhone or Android app, go to More Delete Account. This will send us an email letting us know you want your account deleted. When we get the email we'l send you an email confirming that you want your account deleted and then delete it for you.
11. What are some of the new things we can expect to see from SportsYapper?
There are a whole bunch of cool things we'll be working on in the coming weeks and months. Some key additions to look for are: more sports and teams (especially for soccer and NCAA), Game On for individual sports (ex: golf and tennis) and integration of live scores and stats.
